We just completed the removal of two layers of siding and the installation of new vinyl siding on a home in Braintree, MA. I would suggest to anyone considering re-siding their house that they think long and hard about the best way to proceed. My opinion is that you will get the best long term results by removing all existing siding. This allows you to inspect the condition of your plywood; window casings and sill. If there are any problems, now would be the time to fix them.
Another advantage is that aesthetically the window casings look as they were intended and do not have the additional moldings because of the second layer of siding. It may cost a little more money, but the long term results are worth it.
