Jacobson Basement Remodel – Case Study

The Jacobson family lives in a very nice ranch, built in 1952 on 30 Leroy Drive, Burlington, Massachusetts. A large family room was added in 1990. Dan is a professional photographer and Carol is an Educational Consultant. Their goal was to convert the dated finished basement into a multifunctional area consisting of a multi media center, professional office, full bath, cedar closet and a storage area.

The problem facing Dan and Carol was the fact that the foundation had water infiltration through the floor and wall during heavy rain storms.

After gutting the existing rooms, Dream Builderz first task was to give the Jacobson family a dry basement; this was accomplished by attacking each problem separately. Dream Builderz raised the grade along the front of the house to insure proper drainage and installed window wells. We then connected the crushed stone under the original basement floor with the crushed stone under the 1990 addition’s basement floor which was attached to drainage pipes. After this was accomplished we cut a small opening along the base of the 1952 basement wall and treated the basement walls with “Pure N Seal” to insure that no infiltration would occur. We also installed a “Dricore” subfloor to protect the new oak flooring from any dampness.

The project is complete with oak stairs, an open oak railing with balusters, a pocket door leading to the refurbished ceramic tile bathroom, new baseboard heat, French doors leading to Carol’s office, a media center and of course the closets.

We are happy to report that after the 10 inch rainstorm of March13-15, 2010, the Jacobson basement is still dry!!
